Here you can get a closer look at the typical Hand Split box, how the lid fits and operates.

millwood demo.gif (50699 bytes)This shows the typical Hand Split box. This particular box is approximately 5" x 7" x 3". The ragged border seen here is only the result of processing the picture to remove the background. When the lid is on and secured, the box may be held in any attitude, even upside down, without fear of the lid coming off.

To open the box, the lid is slid, usually to the left (a distinctive mark is applied to the box indicating the direction in which the lid slides). Usually the travel of 1" to 1 1/2", is adequate to allow the lid to be lifted from the box.

With the lid off, and flipped over, the method for restricting movement of the lid and means for securing it in place, are readily observable.

hsdemo2.gif (61701 bytes)An end view of the same box displays the growth rings of the box. This particular box is readily determined to be from an ancient growth tree (1000+ years old), while the time span encompassed by the growth rings of just this particular piece is roughly 200 years, spanning nearly the age of the United States.
